Continuing to drive research and help shape policy proposals for a fairer, greener future, the Institute for Community Studies is embarking on a new, six-month project to explore place-sensitive participatory policy development for a ‘just transition’ to net zero.
Led by Evidence Manager Tania Carregha and Senior Researcher Samanthi Theminimulle, this work supports the British Academy’s public policy programme, which focuses on sustainability and place – covering net zero, place-based climate action, and how local authorities plan for the future at a local level. It is one of seven policy-focused research projects announced by the British Academy, and funded by the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology.
Carregha says: “We’re excited to conduct this vital research to demonstrate the value of involving a diversity of voices in policy development, especially when it comes to the transition to net zero. Only with equal participation can we achieve a truly ‘just’ transition that avoids exacerbating inequalities, and builds a fairer future for all.”
