The Borough Council of Kings Lynn and West Norfolk undertook an ambitious programme of action to change the landscape of youth transitions in West Norfolk. The council wanted to equip their young people to leave school with the skills to experience successful transitions to the next stage of their lives. As part of this work, they approached The Young Foundation to conduct a combination of ethnographies and focus group work to explore young people’s experiences of growing up in Kings Lynn, with the goal of informing how future support for pupils is developed. We looked at what was causing students difficulties at key transition stages, variations between urban and rural experience, and how aspirations are formed.
Our recommendations for improving educational attainment focus on helping students to consider their future education or career early, supporting them through the difficult transition points identified, and involving the wider community in displaying the variety of options open to young people in West Norfolk and beyond. We also look at what’s working already, and how it can be expanded.
